Like fotoace said its probably the auto focus needs to be turned on, this can be done on the lens. However you should also make sure you are shooting at a fast enough shutter speed, namely 1/focal length or faster, so at 55mm you should be shooting at 1/55 or rather 1/60 since that is the nearest existing shutter speed to 1/55. Of course if you can shoot at a faster speed all the better.
