How does the persecution complex benefit religions?

Do you think it might increase unifying bonds amongst fellow believers? I mean, nothing seems to unite people better than having a common enemy. If people can be tricked into thinking that they are in danger, the level of independent thought is reduced with the religious group and independent thought is the enemy of religion. Your thoughts?
